THE REPUBLIC OF TAJIKISTAN
 
The geographical position: Tajikistan is located in the south-east of Central Asia.
      
The area:
143,100 square meters.  In excess of 50% of its territory is located at the altitude of over 3,000 meters above the sea level.
      
The population: 7,181,000 residents.
      
The capital: Doushanbe (approx. 670,000 residents).
      
The administrative territorial division:
3 autonomous regions and 10 regions subordinate to the authorities of the Republic of Tajikistan.   
      
The official language: The Tajik language.  According to the Constitution of the Republic of Tajikistan, the Russian language has the status of the language of international communications.
      
The National Holiday: The Day of State Independence (September 9).
      
The State Structure: The Republic of Tajikistan has a presidential form of government. The state is headed by President E. Rahmon (reelected President for another term of seven years as of November 2006); he also serves as the head of the executive authority.  A. A. Akilov is the prime minister of the Republic of Tajikistan. 
      
The Legislative Authority: Majlissi Oli bicameral parliament.    The upper chamber named Majlissi Milli is chaired by M.U. Ubaidoulloyev, the lower chamber named Majlissi Namoyangadon is chaired by S.H. Khairoulloyev).
      
Political Parties: The major parties of Tajikistan include the People’s Democratic party, the Party of Islamic Revival, the Communist party, the Socialist party, the Social Democratic party, the Party of economic reforms, the Agrarian party. 
      
The National Economy: The Republic of Tajikistan is an agricultural and industrial country. 
      
The Industry: Tajikistan has reserves of complex ores, uranium, coal, oil, gas, and a substantial amount of water resources.  The leading industries include non-ferrous metallurgy, consumer industry, food processing, flour-and-cereals industry, compound feed production, fuel and power generation, machine building and metal processing, industrial goods and construction materials, chemicals and petrochemicals. 

Tajikistan is a leading cotton producer of the CIS.  It has silkworm breeding, vegetable growing, fruit and wine-growing.
      
In 2007, the GDB reached approx. USD 3,700,000,000, up by 7.8% vs. the 2006 GDP figure.  The industrial output was up by 9.9%; the agricultural output was up by 6.5%; the production of consumer goods was up by 19.4%.
      
Export and Import Operations: The foreign trade turnover reached USD 3,923,000,000 in 2007 (vs. USD 3,122,000,000 in 2006); the export operations value was USD 1,468,000,000, the import operations value was USD 2,455,000,000.  The principal exported products include cotton and aluminum.  Energy products, including electric power and gas, chemicals, alumina, machinery and equipment, vehicles, plant products are imported form Tajikistan.

The principal business partners of Tajikistan include Russia, the Netherlands, Turkey, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, China, Iran, and Italy.

Russia/Tajikistan  Relationship    

Diplomatic relations were established between the Russian Federation and the Republic of Tajikistan on April 8, 1992.  On May 25, 1993, 1992, the Treaty of Friendship, Cooperation and Mutual Aid was executed.  In excess of 120 interstate, intergovernmental and interagency agreements have been made to govern cooperation in political, economic, military, humanitarian and other areas.  Regular contacts are maintained on the highest level.
